Compliance calendars: the cheapest insurance a company can buy

Regulatory housekeeping is invisible when it is done and extremely visible when it is not. A maintained calendar is the least expensive control a business can put in place.

Compliance calendars: the cheapest insurance a company can buy

Almost every compliance failure ARAN is asked to correct has the same origin. The obligation was known to one person, that person left or was unavailable, and nothing in the business surfaced the gap until a notice did.

What a working calendar has that a list does not

  • Every obligation, including the annual ones nobody has thought about since incorporation.
  • A named owner and a named reviewer for each, with the reviewer different from the owner.
  • The preparation date, not only the due date. Most filings need a week of work before them.
  • Evidence of completion stored against the entry, so the position can be proven later.

The last point matters more than it seems. In a diligence exercise or an assessment, the question is not whether you filed. It is whether you can show that you filed, quickly, without a search.

Compliance that lives in one person's memory is not compliance. It is a dependency.
